Head Swim/Water Polo Coach: Charlie Equels

 

Coach Charlie Equels's started in 2012-13 with Patrick Henry Aquatics. He is currently the Boys and Girls Water Polo Head Coach, assisted by Hector Sanchez. He has coached the sport for more than ten years (including four as Head Coach at Canyon Crest Academy).  Charlie has played the sport at an international level for more than 17 years.

Charlie graduated from Santana High School in 2004 as a CIF 1st Team All American.  He was also selected as the Grossmont Union High School District player of the year in 2003 and 2004. Charlie played for San Diego Shores throughout his career.

In addition to Patrick Henry, Charlie coaches the UCSD Women’s Club Team, San Diego Shores 12&under Boys and 18&under Girls teams, and served as the Olympic Development Coach for the State of California 2009, 2010 and 2011.

Assistant Swim/ JV & Novice Water polo Coach: Hector Sanchez

Hector began coaching at Patrick Henry in 2014. He is currently the Assistant Coach for the Boys and Girls' water polo team, in charge of teaching the game to the Junior Varsity and Novice teams. Starting in 2017, Hector became the Assistant Swim Coach at Patrick Henry. He is also the Head Coach of the UCSD Men's Water Polo Club Team and Poseidon Water Polo Club.
 
Hector played the sport since he was 10 years old, beginning his career at the City Heights Rec. Pool. Hector played water polo for Serra High School from 2006-2009. He was a team captain, and was the team's leading scorer his senior year in 2009. Additionally Hector was among the top three players in multiple statistical categories, including assists and steals.
 
Aside from water polo, Hector has participated in Soccer and Swim. Throughout high school, he played for multiple local clubs including San Diego Shores. After high school, he went on to play at Mesa College for two seasons (2010, 2013). Outside of water polo, Hector is currently a Pool Manager for the City of San Diego. 
 
Swim Stroke Assistant Coach Andrew Higdon

Andrew has been swimming since the age of 15 and began his career with Serra High School (where he holds numerous school records) and North Coast Aquatics. While attending SDSU, he swam for College Area Swim Team and competed at the national level for 4 years, ending his competitive career in August 2016. 

 

Andrew specializes in sprint butterfly, freestyle and backstroke races, but is proficient in all strokes/differences. Andrew has competed against and trained with the highest levels of athletes including, world record holders, national champions, and Olympians. He is excited to bring a fresh perspective to the team and add to the depth of the patrick henry swim team.
